About this tool

The Retro SFX Generator makes classic 8-bit and 16-bit style sound effects directly in your browser — jumps, coins, lasers, explosions, power-ups, hits and UI blips — the kind of sounds you hear in NES, Game Boy and early arcade games. Pick a category to get a randomised starting point, then tweak the synthesis parameters until it fits your game.

Every sound is synthesised on the fly using the Web Audio API, so there are no sample packs to download and no licensing to worry about: what you generate is yours to use in commercial and non-commercial projects alike. Export is a standard 16-bit WAV file that drops straight into Unity, Godot, GameMaker, Unreal or any DAW.

How to use it

  1. Pick a preset (pickup/coin, laser, explosion, powerup, hit, jump, blip) — the tool loads a fitting starting point.
  2. Press play to hear it; use Mutate for small variations or Randomize All for something new.
  3. Fine-tune the synthesis knobs (waveform, frequency, envelope, vibrato, filters) to shape the sound.
  4. Click "Export WAV" and drop the file into your game engine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the generated sounds in a commercial game?

Yes. The sounds are synthesised from parameters, not sampled from anyone else's recordings, so there is nothing to license. Use them however you like — no attribution required.

Which file format do I get?

A 16-bit PCM WAV file, which every game engine and audio editor understands. Convert it to OGG or MP3 with your engine's import settings if you need smaller files.

Does anything get uploaded?

No. Synthesis, playback and WAV encoding all happen in your browser. The page works offline once loaded.

Is this like sfxr / bfxr / jsfxr?

It follows the same idea — parameterised chiptune synthesis with category presets — implemented from scratch for the browser. If you know those tools you will feel at home.
